Effect of Sensory Modality on Performance, Workload, and Frontal Lobe Oxygenation in a Standard Vigilance Task
نویسنده
چکیده
The purpose of this research was to compare vigilance performance over time for visual, auditory, and vibrotactile tasks, while simultaneously recording oxygenation in the frontal lobe to assess physiological resource utilization. Subjective workload was assessed in each condition using the NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX). The data indicate a significant effect of time-on-task in all experimental conditions, with the vigilance decrement asserting in each modality condition within the first twenty minutes of the task. Significant differences in overall hit rates and nonparametric sensitivity (A′) were found between the loosely coupled visual modality and the closely coupled tactile and auditory modalities. Conversely, frontal lobe oxygenation increased with time-on-task, possibly reflecting increased processing demands as cognitive resources wane. The results suggest that although the vigilance decrement exists for all modality conditions, tactile vigilance tasks may be performed as efficiently as auditory vigils, with no significant differences in workload or physiological resource utilization.

Effects of Sensory Modality and Task Duration on Performance, Workload, and Stress in Sustained Attention
The workload and stress associated with a 40-min vigilance task were examined under conditions wherein observers monitored an auditory or a visual display for changes in signal duration. Global workload scores fell in the midrange of the NASA Task Load Index, with scores on the Frustration subscale increasing linearly over time. These effects were unrelated to the sensory modality of signals. H...
متن کاملThe Effects of Task Type and Source Complexity on Vigilance Performance, Workload, and Stress
The present study investigated the effects of task type (cognitive vs. sensory) and source complexity (number of displays to be monitored) of the performance, workload, and stress associated with vigilance. Results affirmed the utility of the cognitive-sensory task distinction of the vigilance taxonomy, although in contrast to previous research the cognitive task was associated with lower perfo...
متن کاملImaging brain fatigue from sustained mental workload: An ASL perfusion study of the time-on-task effect
During sustained periods of a taxing cognitive workload, humans typically display time-on-task (TOT) effects, in which performance gets steadily worse over the period of task engagement. Arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used in this study to investigate the neural correlates of TOT effects in a group of 15 subjects as they performed a 20-mi...
متن کاملEnhancing vigilance in operators with prefrontal cortex transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)
Sustained attention, often referred to as vigilance in humans, is the ability to maintain goal-directed behavior for extended periods of time and respond to intermittent targets in the environment. With greater time-on-task the ability to detect targets decreases and reaction time increases-a phenomenon termed the vigilance decrement. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of dorsola...
متن کاملUse of EEG Workload Indices for Diagnostic Monitoring of Vigilance Decrement
OBJECTIVE A study was run to test which of five electroencephalographic (EEG) indices was most diagnostic of loss of vigilance at two levels of workload. BACKGROUND EEG indices of alertness include conventional spectral power measures as well as indices combining measures from multiple frequency bands, such as the Task Load Index (TLI) and the Engagement Index (El). However, it is unclear whi...
